I love it when I get to interview people and they portray so much honesty and are so genuine in sharing their story. Well, Atika is one of those people. I can sense the level of respect and love that she has for her parents when she talks about her parents and their trademark that are so inherently them. It warms the heart and reminds me of my parents too :)
Mak is a fulltime housewife and Abah is the breadwinner of the family.
Abah works as as a garbage collector for Alam Flora for the past 30 years. He will leave home before the sun rises and come home close to 11pm at night. Growing up, I would wake up early because I always look forward to shake and kiss his hand in the morning before he goes to work.
When I was a little girl, Abah taught me how to drink hot tea from the plate. He will pour the tea on a small plate, cool the drink with his little blows and pass me the plate to sip from. To this day, it is our father – daughter ritual. Except that, the table has turned – now, I am the one who would pour the drink and blow the tea for Abah because his sight has deteriorated.
Mak, is always the one with words of gold. She would remind me that we are not from a well off family so working hard on what I love doing is how I can improve myself. She is the voice behind all my hard work. I work with an e-Commerce company. I’m also a freelance writer for Man’s Physics Malaysia (so I get to take picture with hot dudes!) and I’m a volunteer for TheLevel. My – where they make you try new and weird things – usually food – and post them on youtube. I enjoy all that I do, and I'm always reminded of Mak's regular reminder for me to be positive in life. Nowadays, when I’m not home by a certain time, Mak would text to check on my whereabouts and she would drop little hints for me to come home – like informing me that she’s sleeping soon. But then, when I got home (no matter how late), there she will be waiting with her tired eyes, and she would say the same thing every single time, “Hah, ingat kan dah tak jumpa rumah!” (“I thought you forgot where our home is already!”)
